We do everything we can to save teeth and this will occasionally lead to us having to undertake root canal treatment on a tooth or endodontics. If a tooth is badly broken down or abscessed, the interior part of the tooth becomes infected and exposed. This pulp centre, therefore, needs removing and cleansing the remaining cavity.
This is exactly what root canal treatment is. We cleanse out the interior part of the root structure and disinfect it to prevent further infection. Then we seal the root canal structure and then restore the tooth for extra strength, usually with a crown.
Root canal treatment used to be a difficult and drawn out procedure but this is no longer the case with use of modern equipment and materials. More complex root canal treatments will be referred to a specialist, your dentist will advise at your appointment.
